Summer Camp — Katanas & Water Balloons
This year’s Summer Camp 2021 was a huge success and a lot of fun! In the interest of COVID safety protocols and to maximize the awesomeness of the camp experience we put strict limits on the number of students.
The focus of Summer Camp 2021 was learning a form using the katana, a single-edged sword of Japanese origin. Each of the campers received their own practice katana which they customized with paint. There were some very artistic paint jobs!
We practiced the katana form daily as well as doing drills with wooden swords called "bokken" and played many games in between. Clearly, the camper's favorite game was a giant water battle complete with balloons and water guns - ending with dumping a tub of water on everyone who didn’t get as wet as they wanted. Even the Senseis and Master Steve got involved in the fun...and soaked!
This year, the Sensei's also directed "leadership breakouts" with our pre-teen/teen campers. Topics of discussion included what it means to practice leadership on a day-to-day basis at school and at home, dealing with stress, and bystander intervention.
The week ended with a demonstration of the katana form for parents, board breaking, and a certificate award ceremony.
